Daylight Savings ends this Sunday, November 6. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour. Use this seasonal reminder to check household safety products like changing the batteries in your smoke alarms. Be sure to install carbon monoxide monitors if you haven't already. Many companies now sell a combo smoke/carbon monoxide detector that you can just plug into an outlet in every bedroom. It’s also a good time to change the filters in your heating system. Summit County shares its boundaries with its own school district: The Summit School District. The county and district span from Green Mountain Reservoir in the north to Hoosier Pass in the south, from Copper Mountain in the west to Arapahoe Basin in the east. The district is home to six public elementary schools, one public middle school, one public high school and one public alternative school. The elementary schools are nested in the communities of Breckenridge, Frisco, Summit Cove, Dillon Valley and Silverthorne. The annual changing of the aspen leaves is always a telltale marker of the transition from summer to fall in the high country. This summer’s heavy rains followed by a dry and mild September has made the golden leaves stay spectacular for weeks on end! Friday night the ski area got its first dusting of snow and the contrast between the white peaks and golden valleys was awe inspiring. Town was bustling all weekend with “leaf peepers”… folks up from the front range to take in the incredible mountain colors.

Each year, The Summit County Builders Association and The Summit Foundation collaborate to host the Parade of Homes. This unique event gives the public a rare opportunity to tour some of the most beautifully remodeled and newly built homes in the county. In its 27th year, the 2022 Parade features five homes with stops in Silverthorne, Keystone and Breckenridge. While the tour is a platform for builders, architects and designers to showcase their talents, it’s also your chance to see the most current materials, technologies and designs in the industry. And to collect great ideas for your own home!

I was lucky to be part of the Summit County Special Olympics Tennis Team this summer! The training consisted of weekly practices – frequently held on the indoor courts at the beautiful Breckenridge Tennis Center – throughout the summer. Athletes ages 10 – 21 participated in warmups, skills drills and doubles tennis. Some were new to the program and others had won medals at state championships in recent years. At the end of our summer training, three of the players went on to participate in the state-level competition at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs: Erikka Abbott of Dillon, Gabe Duwaik of Silverthorne and Caroline Willis of Frisco.

For the past 35 years, The Great Rubber Duck Race has been a Labor Day weekend tradition in  Breckenridge. Join the fun and cheer on 10,000 rubber ducks as they “race” down the Blue River through the heart of town on Saturday, September 3 from 11am – 4pm. The Summit Foundation sponsors this incredible event and raises over $100,000 for local grant and scholarship programs every year. There are 3 races: the Kids Duck Race, the Business Battle Duck Race and the Great Duck Race. Everyone is encouraged to adopt ducks online at SummitFoundation.org. The hiking around Summit County just keeps getting better and better! The trails are well maintained and well-marked and the weather is never too hot to hike. The Town of Frisco has spent countless hours improving the Peninsula Trails along Lake Dillon. Their network now really does offer something for everyone. This summer the Town of Breckenridge designed some clever new trail signs that caught the eye of Denver’s 9 News. Take a peek!

Did you know that the Town of Frisco hosts concerts every Thursday throughout the summer in their Historic Park on Main Street FOR FREE? This summer series has really brought back that fabulous community feel! Concerts take place every Thursday from June 23 to September 8, 2022 from 5:30-7:30 pm. Genres vary from funk and blues to folk, soul, R&B, rock, reggae and bluegrass. In addition to the beauty of music in the mountains, each week there is a local non-profit that benefits from the sale of beer, wine and soft drinks at the event. Everyone wins! Folks are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets and snacks. Today is their fifth concert of the summer and here are the bands we still have to look forward to.
