International Snow Sculpture 2023

Did you know that our quiet little mountain town hosts one of the biggest and best snow sculpture competitions anywhere in the world? The International Snow Sculpture Championships will kick off on January 23 this year and 94 grueling hours later, judges will decide the 2023 winners Teams will travel from Germany, Denmark, Great Britain, Lithuania, India, Italy, Switzerland and across the USA to compete in this world-class event. The massive 12-foot-tall art pieces are impressive to walk amongst during the day but if you can make it by after dark, the “Grand Illumination” with the finished sculptures lit to perfection showcases this outdoor museum in absolutely mind-blowing fashion

The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are only required for viewing on Saturday, January 28 (because that is the busiest day to view).

The sculptures will stand for just a short time - until February 1. Don’t miss out on this internationally recognized event right here in Breckenridge. You can find all the details online at GoBreck.com

This amazing video from the Breckenridge Resort Chamber showcases the town’s 30+ year history with snow sculpture.

Daylight Savings ends this Sunday, November 6. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour. Use this seasonal reminder to check household safety products like changing the batteries in your smoke alarms. Be sure to install carbon monoxide monitors if you haven't already. Many companies now sell a combo smoke/carbon monoxide detector that you can just plug into an outlet in every bedroom. It’s also a good time to change the filters in your heating system. Enjoy that extra hour of rest

Summit County Schools

Summit County shares its boundaries with its own school district: The Summit School District. The county and district span from Green Mountain Reservoir in the north to Hoosier Pass in the south, from Copper Mountain in the west to Arapahoe Basin in the east. The district is home to six public elementary schools, one public middle school, one public high school and one public alternative school. The elementary schools are nested in the communities of Breckenridge, Frisco, Summit Cove, Dillon Valley and Silverthorne. Students in those neighborhoods attend their “home school” and their families are an integral part of the school’s success. Two elementary schools – Dillon Valley and Silverthorne Elementary – are dual language schools where students learn in both English and Spanish throughout the school day. Most of the district’s elementary schools have two classrooms of each grade from preschool through 5th grade.

Summit Middle School is centrally located on the edge of Lake Dillon in Frisco and shares a campus with Snowy Peaks Alternative School (Grades 7-12). Summit High School sits between Frisco and Breckenridge. The district serves about 3,500 students and its mission is to prepare caring, courageous, community-minded people who create a better world. www.summitk12.org

The annual changing of the aspen leaves is always a telltale marker of the transition from summer to fall in the high country. This summer’s heavy rains followed by a dry and mild September has made the golden leaves stay spectacular for weeks on end Friday night the ski area got its first dusting of snow and the contrast between the white peaks and golden valleys was awe inspiring. Town was bustling all weekend with “leaf peepers”… folks up from the front range to take in the incredible mountain colors.
