Daylight Savings ends this Sunday, November 6. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour. Use this seasonal reminder to check household safety products like changing the batteries in your smoke alarms. Be sure to install carbon monoxide monitors if you haven't already. Many companies now sell a combo smoke/carbon monoxide detector that you can just plug into an outlet in every bedroom. It’s also a good time to change the filters in your heating system. Enjoy that extra hour of rest!

The last week has been made up of colder mountain temperatures and has had local ski areas making snow around the clock. Arapahoe Basin kicked off its ski season last Sunday with skiers and boarders celebrating the first resort in the area to run their lifts. And late yesterday Keystone made the big announcement that TOMORROW 10/28/22 will be their opening day! Guests who arrive early tomorrow will be treated to free donuts, hot cocoa and first-chair prizes from Helly Hansen. Keystone will bring back night skiing on weekends and holidays starting Thanksgiving Day.

The other local resorts will soon follow suit with Breckenridge scheduled to open on November 11 and Copper Mountain on November 14.

Summit County shares its boundaries with its own school district: The Summit School District. The county and district span from Green Mountain Reservoir in the north to Hoosier Pass in the south, from Copper Mountain in the west to Arapahoe Basin in the east. The district is home to six public elementary schools, one public middle school, one public high school and one public alternative school. The elementary schools are nested in the communities of Breckenridge, Frisco, Summit Cove, Dillon Valley and Silverthorne. Students in those neighborhoods attend their “home school” and their families are an integral part of the school’s success. Two elementary schools – Dillon Valley and Silverthorne Elementary – are dual language schools where students learn in…

I was lucky to be part of the Summit County Special Olympics Tennis Team this summer! The training consisted of weekly practices – frequently held on the indoor courts at the beautiful Breckenridge Tennis Center – throughout the summer. Athletes ages 10 – 21 participated in warmups, skills drills and doubles tennis. Some were new to the program and others had won medals at state championships in recent years. At the end of our summer training, three of the players went on to participate in the state-level competition at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs: Erikka Abbott of Dillon, Gabe Duwaik of Silverthorne and Caroline Willis of Frisco.

Our local Special Olympics program is really growing! We trained in Track and Field last spring and…
