I was lucky to be part of the Summit County Special Olympics Tennis Team this summer! The training consisted of weekly practices – frequently held on the indoor courts at the beautiful Breckenridge Tennis Center – throughout the summer. Athletes ages 10 – 21 participated in warmups, skills drills and doubles tennis. Some were new to the program and others had won medals at state championships in recent years. At the end of our summer training, three of the players went on to participate in the state-level competition at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs: Erikka Abbott of Dillon, Gabe Duwaik of Silverthorne and Caroline Willis of Frisco.

Our local Special Olympics program is really growing! We trained in Track and Field last spring and begin the bowling team next week. We hope to develop cross-country skiing programs and snowshoeing to get in shape before the alpine skiing and snowboarding programs begin in January.
